Sprints: Correction from previous week, Darien won Verrado. Last Saturday: Ken won 2, Jason won 2, Arrick Neitert won, and Darien won again. The points total for the free training from SkinSport is wide open, and I might add, the winner for August will be based on subjective results. Meaning, there are points for those domestiques who get the sprinters to the line. Let’s have fun with this, but safety first!

Pulling King/Queen: Steve, Shawn, Leo, Jared, George, Tracey, and Jeremy were impressive for the A group, In the B group: Brian, Nick, Rick, Ahmad, Bret, Marty, and Joe kept our tempo above 20mph

Additional Notes: Some great new riders: Angie, Aaron, and John. Last Saturday brought out 40 riders and it rained on us from beginning to end. Even with those conditions, it probably made the top 10 rides of the year. Everyone had a good attitude, we were safe, lots of good laughs, and for us mountain bikers, a little mud is a good thing! The B group did take a new route to Verrado, right on Dean (much better road), which added a couple of miles and made the 2nd stop timing with the A group much better. Lastly, the Sunday ride is in full swing. LifeTime at 6am. 32 miles to Verrado with coffee break. Averaging 10 to 14 riders.

I had three Garmin owners compute average speed for our rides over last few weeks, here are the results for the full ride:

Saturday A group: 22.8 mph, Saturday B group: 19.7 mph, Sunday: 17.5 mph

Scottsdale Cycling Festival Kick-Off Party to generate buzz for large-scale local cycling event

Tour de France finale inspires local cyclists to get in gear

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (July 7, 2010)—To capitalize on the energy of the July 3-25 Tour de France and get local cyclists, both pro and amateur, energized about the upcoming Scottsdale Cycling Festival, the DC Ranch Community Council will host a Kick-Off Party on Friday, July 23, at DNA Cycles in north Scottsdale from 5 to 8 p.m. The Kick-Off Party is an opportunity to meet pro riders and past Tour racers; register for either the Criterium or 70-mile Tour at reduced rates; preview the latest cycling gear; and meet fellow cyclists amid the excitement of the final days of the world’s best-known cycling event, the Tour de France.

With about eight weeks between the Kick-Off Party and the Scottsdale Cycling Festival, the end of July is the ideal timeframe for Scottsdale Cycling Festival cyclists to kick their training into high gear for the 1-kilometer loop Criterium race course and 70-mile citizen’s ride. Both races are sanctioned by USA Cycling. The prize purse for the Criterium is $5,000; Tour de Scottsdale prizes include merchandise, in accordance with USA Cycling regulations.

The Scottsdale Cycling Festival has been expanded in 2010 to include both a Criterium at DC Ranch and the 7th annual Tour de Scottsdale benefiting McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. The weekend long event is Sept. 30-Oct. 3 and offers athletic competition, recreational cycling, spectatorship and family fun.

“Phoenix does not have a large-scale, sanctioned, prize purse-offering cycling event. Which, given the amount of cyclists in the Valley and beautiful roads we ride on, is surprising,” said Austin King, local former pro cyclist who raced for five seasons with the USA National Team. Now 29 and retired from cycling, King holds the record of being the youngest USA Cycling coach when he was 14.

“Many big events start from small, well-organized grassroots efforts that have the backing of a community. The Scottsdale Cycling Festival has this support,” said King. “And especially as the Tour de France wraps up on July 25, cycling has an audience who is primed to learn where they can race and be part of the sport locally.”

King and local pro cyclist Megan French, who rides for Tribe Racing, will be on hand at the Scottsdale Cycling Festival Kick-Off Party to talk about their cycling experiences and offer training advice for the Sept. 30-Oct. 3 event.

CLIPPED IN AND ROLLING AT 6 A.M. (so we can get done before we melt). We will roll neutral down Central to South Mountain, through the gate, and then let the hammer fest begin! We will go to the very top just like last time. For the fast guys that beat everyone up by about 15 minutes, I suggest that group rolls half way down and climbs the last mile again. This way the fast group won’t be waiting around for slower riders. We will regroup at the top, descend to the Circle K at the bottom, grab some water and snacks and head back to the parking lot. 2 sprint points on the way back just like last time.

Starting 6/22 the Tortilla Flats Road Race Series is now known as the Tortilla Flats Training/Group Ride

6/21 UPDATE: The permit for the 2010 Tortilla Flats Race Series has been revoked by ADOT (at the advice of the forest service). The last race of the series was effectively 6/15/10.

We will be replacing the Race Series with a TRAINING RIDE Series. Meeting at the Mining Camp Restaurant on Tuesdays on the same dates as the 2010 race series flyer. It will not be insured by USA cycling. Hope to see you there!
