Hello,
My name is Thomas Jondall, I’m 18 years old and I race for Landis/Trek White Mountain Road Club. I’ve recently been selected to race in Europe with the US Junior National Team. The team will be racing some Kermesses in Belgium and then go to Italy for the Giro della Lunigiana UCI 2.1 and Giro di Basilicata UCI 2.1. It has been an exciting year for me and I’m looking forward to this new challenge. Read more here.
We like to keep current on the locals out racing on the big scene – fighting the good fight. Jelly Belly neo-pro Sean Mazich is one of them. Below are a couple Q&A’s with Sean as he’s just returned from racing in China.
—————
Velocity Group Cycling: How has the first half of your season gone? Are you happy with your performance?
Sean Mazich: It has gone great I think. I have gotten results and helped the team. For it being my first year I would say I’m very happy with it and can’t wait to hopefully keep learning and getting better.
VGC: What’s surprised you most about racing on the professional circuit?
SM: What has surprised me the most would be HOW INSANE CHINA WAS!!
VGC: Have you become pretty proficient at living out of a suitcase?
SM: I’m truly amazing at it. I have been doing it all year.
VGC: We hear you’ve recently spent some time in China. How was the Tour of Qinghai Lake?
SM: Wow where do I even begin on this question. China is insane. We where in the mountains at 10 to 14,000ft the whole time in these little tiny mountain towns. which was good and bad. Got so see some amazing views which was really nice. The racing was really tough. I was working full on for my teammate and gave the man everything I had. It was also my first time completing a 10 day stage race. In the end I’m glad I went and was very pleased with way I rode. Gotta go back in October to!
VGC: What are your plans for the rest of the season?
SM: Still have a ways to go for the rest of the season. Road Nationals is in South Carolina on September 19, then off to Vegas for Inter bike, After that its back to China for another 10 day stage race then shooting over to Korea for a 5 day stage race. Should be gone and home on November 1.
Thanks Sean and best of luck with the rest of 2010.

Scottsdale Cycling Festival Kick-Off Party to generate buzz for large-scale local cycling event
Tour de France finale inspires local cyclists to get in gear
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (July 7, 2010)—To capitalize on the energy of the July 3-25 Tour de France and get local cyclists, both pro and amateur, energized about the upcoming Scottsdale Cycling Festival, the DC Ranch Community Council will host a Kick-Off Party on Friday, July 23, at DNA Cycles in north Scottsdale from 5 to 8 p.m. The Kick-Off Party is an opportunity to meet pro riders and past Tour racers; register for either the Criterium or 70-mile Tour at reduced rates; preview the latest cycling gear; and meet fellow cyclists amid the excitement of the final days of the world’s best-known cycling event, the Tour de France.
With about eight weeks between the Kick-Off Party and the Scottsdale Cycling Festival, the end of July is the ideal timeframe for Scottsdale Cycling Festival cyclists to kick their training into high gear for the 1-kilometer loop Criterium race course and 70-mile citizen’s ride. Both races are sanctioned by USA Cycling. The prize purse for the Criterium is $5,000; Tour de Scottsdale prizes include merchandise, in accordance with USA Cycling regulations.
The Scottsdale Cycling Festival has been expanded in 2010 to include both a Criterium at DC Ranch and the 7th annual Tour de Scottsdale benefiting McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. The weekend long event is Sept. 30-Oct. 3 and offers athletic competition, recreational cycling, spectatorship and family fun.
“Phoenix does not have a large-scale, sanctioned, prize purse-offering cycling event. Which, given the amount of cyclists in the Valley and beautiful roads we ride on, is surprising,” said Austin King, local former pro cyclist who raced for five seasons with the USA National Team. Now 29 and retired from cycling, King holds the record of being the youngest USA Cycling coach when he was 14.
“Many big events start from small, well-organized grassroots efforts that have the backing of a community. The Scottsdale Cycling Festival has this support,” said King. “And especially as the Tour de France wraps up on July 25, cycling has an audience who is primed to learn where they can race and be part of the sport locally.”
King and local pro cyclist Megan French, who rides for Tribe Racing, will be on hand at the Scottsdale Cycling Festival Kick-Off Party to talk about their cycling experiences and offer training advice for the Sept. 30-Oct. 3 event.

Here is a weekly update from West Valley Cycle Group Ride organizer David Herzog. For those that aren’t familiar with it, the West Valley Cycle is a multi level Saturday morning group ride out in Phoenix’s west side. Visit their website for more details: http://members.cox.net/westvalleycycle/
—————
The start time for Saturday is 6:00am. (we did successfully knock off 25 min last week with the quick turnaround at the market and were back to Lifetime by 9am) Thanks for those who purchased ice and water. It helps a lot. Let’s all chip in on this effort.
Sprints: Glenn 3X (Progressive), Ken 2X (Colavita), Jim Holbrook 1 (AZ Masters) (sprint points listed below)
Pulling King/Queen: Leo (the other reason why we shaved off 25 min), Jim Holbrook, Tracy Perez, Amy Vasquez, Brian Murphy, Glenn Allen
Additional Notes: 45 riders last week. The new B group route was perfect and the entire group stayed together for the first half. Nice to have guest riders Mike Smith and John Anderson hanging with the cool group! Always recruiting.
July 4th Sunday Ride event: contact Tim for details: timothyf.fleming@lpl.com Sunday, July 4th, meet at Camelback and Central, Northeast parking lot (where Applebees is). CLIPPED IN AND ROLLING AT 6 A.M. (so we can get done before we melt). We will roll neutral down Central to South Mountain, through the gate, and then let the hammer fest begin! We will go to the very top just like last time. For the fast guys that beat everyone up by about 15 minutes, I suggest that group rolls half way down and climbs the last mile again. This way the fast group won’t be waiting around for slower riders. We will regroup at the top, descend to the Circle K at the bottom, grab some water and snacks and head back to the parking lot. 2 sprint points on the way back just like last time.

It’s the dog days of summer…
who ever thought that expression up anyways?
Probably someone who was hot (in a literal sense). Like Phoenix hot. Tucson’s hot too.
Anyways – and to prevent unnecessary rambling – this is the time of year where cycling slows down a little bit in Arizona. It’s hot so many ride less or not at all. Racing is minimal too. And before long our content on this site slows down as well. It’s tough to report on Arizona cycling when there isn’t much going on. So, if you have something to report, or would like to publicize an event or gathering, please feel free to let us know and we will happily circulate it here on the website.
Where’s Rusty Chain when you need him?
Anyways, I’m going back to sitting in my pool. Actually, I don’t have a pool so I will sit in my bathtub instead.
