It’s too bad there wasn’t enough expressed interest prior to this event. I was injured last weekend and broke my bike, so I couldn’t register, period. I think it would have shaped up to be an outstanding event, provided the work ethic of the organizer. “Pre-reg” is there for a reason, so promoters can get an idea of interest, outside daily ride and event buzz. Perhaps a stronger push in the “Juniors” area could have helped, and it is hard, I can imagine, to get a good gauge of teen interest a few days in advance. But if you plan to race any given weekend, do the promoters a favor and pre-register. I, personally, have a family and it is hard to commit too far in advance, based on household schedules and kid stuff, but let’s help each other out.
Racers can’t race without events, and promoting teams can’t promote events without racers…
mbibbey- I agree. I have a family too and it can be hard to commit a few weeks out. Things seem to get in the way and I hate to pay the entry fee only to find out I need to go to soccer practice instead. Maybe promoters should agree upfront to refund any entry for a rider who can’t make it day of? That way the promoters get what they want: preregistered riders. And riders get what they want: flexibility in case they cant make it.
I think having it the same weekend as Bisbee and the Tour of Tucson Mountains probably hurt the attendance. Not as much peer discussion of it among the racing community due to Bisbee. Plus the TDTM probably attacted a bunch of the cat 5 folks that might have raced it on a different weekend. I hate to see these things cancelled. We have lost the Bartlett TT, Usery Pass etc.. It is hard to put a race on in Maricopa County.
There probably would have been at least a little more interest if they would have scheduled more events. I never understood why there weren’t races for the 1/2/3s?
The WW Crit didn’t offer 1/2/3s so as to not compete with Bisbee for race entrants. The agreement was made at the pre-season ABRA planning meeting that AZ events should not “compete” against each other for rider entrants on the same dates. The WW organizers wanted to respect Bisbee, which is an established event while WW was a new race to the AZ calendar.
