West Valley Cycle – 10/24

West Valley Cycle – 10/24

Just in from West Valley Cycle organizer David Herzog:

———-

All,

Start time moves to 7:00am this Saturday. Web site is up to date.

· Last week brought 200 riders to the Jim Stenholm ride. Epic would be an understatement. The West Valley Cycle group represented well. Steve, Scott and April, Tim Risley, Michelle, Shaun S, Jason, John C., John, Jared, Bob, Vicki, Kathy, Ryan, Christian B, Ray and Harv finished the 56 mile ride with the main group in under 2.5 hours. It’s so cool to see our cycling community rise to the occasion for such a special event.

· Saturday’s West side ride went on with a several riders including Joe, Mike, Stephanie, Heather, Amy and Jeremy.

· I heard Jeremy took his fold up bike to a new level. He flew out to So Cal an rode it back to Phoenix (350 miles). What an adventure! Look forward to those stories.

· Soma Race Results: Sally won her age group for the 2nd year in a row. Kathy finished 2nd in age group and 4th overall (I might add the top 10 females were mostly Pro’s), Greg Hunter took 2nd in age group, Mark K took 3rd in age group, Mike M took 11th in age group, and my personal highlight was buddy Dan V taking 29th place in age group.

· Finally, best of luck to Paul West and Barry W in this weekend’s JJ100 ultra marathon running race at McDowell mountain. 101 miles in 24+ hours. Thoughts and prayers for these two starting at 6am Saturday morning.

El Grupo Youth Cycling.

El Grupo Youth Cycling.

Sometimes this sport can suck.

I feel comfortable saying that. I’ve been around long enough and seen some up’s and down’s along the years. Want an example? Click here. Saying that “sucked” would be an under statement. I had someone email me today to share a few opinions on this “road rage” trial going on in LA. I agreed, this is an example of the type of awful things we sometimes deal with in the cycling community. After getting that email I checked out the “real” cycling news websites (not this one horse town type of website you’re currently viewing) and read up on the “LA Road Rage Trial” as VeloNews calls it. Kind of gave me the mass-media-FOX News-vibe and I got somewhat bummed out.

That was until this beauty came across my inbox. It was in response to a post made here today.

Hey,

Thanks for the opportunity and the help on this. I have been coaching the El Grupo Youth Cycling team now for 5 years and this is the first year in which I have tried to do this. The attachments are from two different computer programs but they should load up to your computer just fine.

If you are not familiar with El Grupo we are youth cycling team here in Tucson and we had a fantastic year in 09. 6 State Championships and 3 state records along with over 40 podium finishes. We do this all on steel bikes that have refurbished with all used parts. I have a shoe string budget but have been fortunate enough to be able to put together 20 bikes for the team.

You can find out more about us at the web site: www.elgrupocycling.org and I have a blog on there as well.

Thanks

Ignacio Rivera de Rosales

———-

I checked out the provided attachments and the El Grupo website as well…

and you know what…

it put a smile back on my face.

I thought that was a pretty cool thing. Check out the photo page of the website. I’m pretty certain that will put a smile on your face as well! It reminded me of when I was a junior and rode around with the Racelab Junior Development Program. Some of us kept riding, some of us didn’t, but we created memories that will last a lifetime. (Ok, I know, that was corny)…

GRUPOCARD

So I wanted to support El Grupo and post the materials I was sent. The Velocity Group is going to go one step further and donate $100 to El Grupo’s cause. If you want to support youth cycling and do the same, check out the donate feature on their home page or contact El Grupo directly at info@elgrupocycling.org

Have a nice day.

West Valley Cycle – 10/17

West Valley Cycle – 10/17

Just in from David Herzog, organizer of the West Valley Cycle:

———-

All,

· Additional highlights:

John Poisson finished his 2nd Kona Ironman and Michelle Thiry is back on the bike and I heard she was seen on South Mountain last week. Yea!

· Good luck to all Soma racers on Sunday. Go Dan V!

Saturday car pool option:

· If you want to car pool to Jim’s event, Scott Reading is departing from his house at 6:45am sharp in the mega van. 12414 W Monte Vista Rd Avondale, AZ 85392. Cell 602-284-6935

· Hope to see you Saturday, the note below from Rebecca sums it up.

Saturday October 24th, 2009

Jim Stenholm loved Saturday mornings. He would leave a note under a steaming cup of coffee that would be waiting for me when I woke up, and then he would slip out the door before dawn with one clear objective – a great ride with friends.

He would have loved The 100. But as much as he would have relished the hours in the saddle, what Jim would have loved most was the camaraderie and the friendly banter. He would have ridden beside you with a grin from ear to ear, laughing as you egg each other on. And when the miles were done, he would come home and show Spencer and Avery that the most important thing in life is to try your very best, never give up and have fun.

So, as you ride this Saturday, I hope you enjoy The 100 the way that Jim would have – with friends by your side and a smile on your face.

Best,
Rebecca

Cycling On The Big Screen!

Cycling On The Big Screen!

Alright… cycling isn’t featured very often on the big screen. We all know that.

E.T. did briefly ride a bike. As did Rocky. But honestly a good old fashion cycling flick is non-existent.

However it does look like a cycling based movie will be available to view on the big screen for… drum roll please… one day only.

Hey folks, we got to start somewhere. The next cycling movie may have a… uh, two or three day cinema run?

Anyways, the movie is called “Race Across the Sky – the Leadville Trail 100”, a documentary that follows the 2009 Leadville 100. “100” as in 100 mile mountain bike race featuring that Lance guy.

A list of Arizona theatres is listed below. Please call the theater to confirm the start time, but it appears to be as follows: 8:00 pm EST / 7:00 PM CST / 6:00 PM MST and will be rebroadcast at 8:00 PM PST on the West Coast.

AMC Arrowhead Town Center 14 – Glendale, AZ 85308

AMC Westgate 20 – Glendale, AZ 85305

AMC Mesa Grande 24 – Mesa, AZ 85204

AMC Ahwatukee 24 – Phoenix, AZ 85044

AMC Desert Ridge 18 – Phoenix, AZ 85050

Cinemark Cinemark 16 – Mesa, AZ 85201

Cinemark El Con 20 – Tucson, AZ 85716

Cinemark Park Place 20 – Tucson, AZ 85711
