Word on the street is that one of Tucson’s finest hit the deck… hard!
So, to get the full scoop and keep the Arizona cycling community up to snuff we caught up with Curtis Gunn (Fly V Australia) as he waits to compete again at SuperWeek. Here’s the full story on what went down and how he’s doing.
RE: StupidWeek Fun
Hey.
A spectator – an under 10 year old girl on a blue bike (that is the only thing I saw) – rode onto the race course as I was trying to bridge the gap to a breakaway with one other rider. The other rider blocked my view of the girl coming at us and I never saw her until I was in the air. Probably hit her at 30-35 mph. I was told the girl is OK. I never actually saw her after the wreck as I was put into an ambulance.
I went over the bars and landed HARD on my left side. Broke my fork.
Went to the hospital and was told I had a broken rib and a partially collapsed lung and I got one stitch in a cut on my shin. They sent me to Cook County (apparently one of Chicago’s finest (sarcasm)) made famous by both the TV show ER and the movie The Fugative. As they observed me the lung continued to collapse further but very slowly. Spent two nights there under observation until the lung stabilized. They sent me home yesterday morning.
All is well. Quite sore and hard to breathe, but the doctor tells me that I have to keep doing that even though it hurts.
I am not completely sure, but I think I am going to hang around SuperWeek and maybe try to race again next week if I can breathe OK. My teammates are sitting 1 and 2 on GC and they made need my service next week (although they appear to be doing just fine without me).
I was supposed to fly to Australia a week from today to do some racing down there, but apparently you are not supposed to fly with a partially collapsed lung as it could completely collapse because of the pressure changes and I guess you don’t want that at 37,000 feet over the Pacific. So, that trip is on hold, but hopefully not for too long.
I want to thank every one who has sent their well wishes and support. It is humbling to know how many friends I have out there that are thinking about me.
I am OK. Live to fight another day and still living my dream.
Be well.
Curtis Gunn

holy crap… the thought of hitting a person at 30-35mph makes me cringe.
get well!
