Tomorrow is the final Wednesday Night World Championships (aka Phoenix Consumer Criterium Series). In honor of the final race of the season, Bicycle Haus is donating 500 bucks of prize money (fyi… this can be a better payout than most local crits). This generous contribution is exactly what they did last year and it made for a great race with a decent field. For more on the week day crit series, click here.
Let’s break this down… Who in the world wants to do a weekday interval session alone? I sure don’t, but I know I should or I’ll feel sluggish and have tight lungs for the weekend’s racing. Sometimes I’ll chase cars, or city buses during a round of mid-week interval boredom. So… why not come out and chase other racers around for cash and pleasure? Sounds good to me. I remember the early 1990’s when the Phoenix Consumers Criterium Series was in north Scottsdale around Raintree. It was a beauty! When development approached and the business park came to life, the course moved to a parking lot by Phoenix Municipal Stadium. I’ve seen some great battles in that parking lot.
For 10 bucks and a Wednesday evening, it’s time and money well spent.

An weekend update from Bryan Staub:
This was a good old fashion showdown that wasn’t decided till the final day as the peloton stormed through Tombstone. Team GST took the early lead on the steep uphill prologue and held firm through Stage 1 north and west of Bisbee. John Simonson of GST just edged out Kyle Butkiewicz of Bicycle Haus for the win on the final climb up to the finish in Old Bisbee. Stage 2 Time Trial went south from Bisbee into what seemed like a hundred mile an hour crosswind; Joe Susco of Bicycle Haus took top Masters Points. Going into Sunday’s final Stage 3, Team GST had a narrow lead with 63 points over Bicycle Haus with 60 points. Powerhouse Bicycle Haus Racers Joe Susco and Kevin Kirkwood were the two top Masters Points earners on Sunday’s stage 3 moving themselves up in the Final GC to close the deal on the charging Team GST racers.
What a weekend of Masters Racing! Great Job, Bicycle Haus Racing in Winning the $1000.00 Pactimo Vuelta de Bisbee Bonus!

Double day at the Vuelta. Started off with an 83 mile, morning road race, that ended up being a well controlled race all the way to the sprint back into town. Type 1 and Tecos blew it up in the last couple of k’s, so we were a little spread out coming in. Type 1 were rewarded for their efforts with a stage win for Darren Lill.
About 4hrs later everyone was kitted back up, ready to do battle in the 7.2 mile time-trial. The afternoons biggest challenge came in the 45mpg wind gusts that swept the course. With the winds, success not only takes a strong rider, but a rider with the skill to hold it together in the aero bars. Phil Zajicek took the days honors, putting him into the race lead by 31 seconds. Brian Forbes knocked out a solid ride, bringing him up to 19th in GC. As did Kyle Colavito, holding down 24th.
Sundays road race through Tombstone will likely be a hammer fest as Tecos and Type 1 will be looking to take the final stage and overall honors. And maybe a little more wind?

The La Vuelta de Bisbee is now officially underway with the conclusion of the Mule Pass Prologue. I retain my stance on there being something wrong with hurdling yourself at the side of a mountain for 10 +/- minutes… until I can kill it. Unfortunately, the internet connection at the Bisbee Gym Suites is spotty at best, but I can tell you that Vega of Tecos tore it up with a time of 9 minutes 35 seconds. As for us, the times might not have been what we expected, but there will be plenty of opportunities in tomorrows Sulphur Springs Road Race to put the Rideclean name into the mix. For now, It’s off to bed.

Today the 31st edition of the La Vuelta de Bisbee Stage Race begins. Previous winners include Alexi Grewal, Roy Knickman, Bob Cook, Mike Engleman, and Greg Lemond. Yeah, that’s a legit group of riders.

I’ve been sorting through a barrage of “Earth Day” spam mail from friends, family and others that I don’t really give two shits about. I just can’t fathom what compels others to send me “Earth Day” related email garbage!
Just because I ride a bicycle doesn’t mean I soak my manhood in patchouli oil and design jewelry out of dog feces and discarded soda cans. I don’t send the dude that cuts my hair a bouquet of carnations and some lip gloss on “Gay and Lesbian Day” (not that there is anything wrong with that).
The point is, some people make assumptions that because I ride a bike I’m on a crusade to topple the lavish spendthrift society we have haphazardly designed. Don’t get me wrong, I recycle, I bring my own grocery bags, and I urinate in my neighbors lawn, but this doesn’t make me anymore eco-friendly than Lee Iacocca.
My contribution to earth day will be to forward (or recycle) all the email trash to the “garbage men” of the cycling community at http://azfixed.com/ .
Suck it hippies!
